What is the difference between Nylon and Saran Doll Hair?
Nylon
Nylon was used in vintage 1980's My Little Ponies and in Rainbow High dolls of today. It's softer, silkier and smoother than saran and can hold a curl without product. It's a lighter, fluffier fiber and is a little more prone to flyaways, but these can be easily controlled with a light misting of water while you reroot. It will easily take common fabric dyes.
Nylon is stronger and more chemically stable, allowing it to hold up better than saran over time. It comes in a thousands of colors and is available from many different manufacturers.
Saran
Saran was a common discount hair option used in vintage dolls in the 1960-70's and is still used in many playline Barbie dolls and Integrity dolls today. It's a dense, heavy fiber with a waxy type feel. Some prefer this for rerooting because it's less prone to flyaways. Saran will not hold a curl for long without some kind of product. It can not be dyed easily and requires specialty dyes and careful processing to prevent the color from leaching.
Saran is more delicate than nylon and less stable chemically. Even factory colors are prone to discoloration over time and the manufacturer provides warnings with their sample cards on specific colors. Reds can turn orange, paler shades or "white" will yellow and blues turn slightly green or aqua. Only one company in Japan manufactures saran hair and colors are limited to about 75 different shades.
